Another Hurdle

Boy it seems like every week is a new barrier to my training. This week I got sick on Tuesday and was laid up for a couple of days with not much to eat. My run on Thursday was disastrous as a result of my lack of fueling the previous two days, and Friday I felt like I was just getting back into it. So I approached today's long run as flexibly as I could. Originally I planned on taking it a little easier with just a 14 mile loop, but by about 6 miles I was feeling pretty good and I decided to take advantage of the cool overcast weather and go 16. It ended up being a pretty slow run, but I finished the 16 with some gas left at the end. I'll have time to build my speed back up as the training continues as long as there aren't too many more monkey wrenches in the plans.

Getting Serious Again

I have learned that flexibility in a training program is a key to success. That has really been apparent over the past couple of weeks. Trying to fit in long runs and speedwork into a vacation is challenging at best, throw kids into the equation and you might as well kiss your runs good-bye. Then trying to resume a normal schedule and diet once you return takes time, and it takes its toll on running as well. But I managed to roll with it all and by today I feel pretty much back on track. My 18 miles was tough today, but I finished it, and my tempo run on Thursday was right where it should be thanks to Todd's pace-setting. Interestingly enough, the 18 I did today brought my total for the year up to 900 miles, so I should be on track to meet my goal in early August. From there the sky's the limit!

Vacation

Boy I've been out of the loop with this vacation. Although it's nice to have a break from the internet and phone for a few days. I did get in a few runs in California, a bunch of hilly runs and a long run up the PCH. The best run was up Park Ave to Alta Laguna park, a 1000 foot climb in less than 2 miles (the view at the top was breathtaking). It did make me appreciate running in Colorado though, so many roads there have no sidewalks. All in all it was a great trip and a fun time with the kids. Now that I've had a nice break I can concentrate on my training again with renewed vigor.

Happy 4th of July!

Did a run with the kids today in the joggy stroller. It was nice to have the time to go with them. Lately it's been too hot, or I've been going too long for them. Yesterday I did 10 miles in Boulder, with a fair stretch up the canyon. It's relaxing running with the rushing water going by. I'm really looking forward to the running in California!
